Pilchards Savoury Rice (Pilchards Paella)


  • 1 x 215g can Saldanha Pilchards in Tomato Sauce OR Hot Chilli Sauce
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 cloves garlic – optional
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp masala
  • 1 cup rice
  • 300g frozen mixed vegetables
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley – optional



  1. Drain the pilchards and place sauce to one side.
  2. Flake the pilchard fillets and set to one side.
  3. Cook rice.
  4. Heat the oil and fry onion, masala and garlic.
  5. Fry until lightly browned.
  6. Add the frozen vegetables and cook until soft.
  7. Add rice, flaked pilchards and sauce. Mix together well.
  8. Simmer until the mixture is heated through and the liquid is absorbed.
  9. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Sprinkle with parsley just before serving.
